Maine is one of the top ten states for women entrepreneurs. We sit at number nine, but we still make the cut! With an overall rating of 8.24/10, Maine has a 56.36% business survival rate and a solid 1.68 ratio of women to men in management roles.
Basically, our founder knew what she was doing when she moved reCreative from New York to Connecticut and then up to Maine. New England is the place to be if you’re a woman entrepreneur. Of the six states that make up New England, five are listed in the top ten best states for female entrepreneurs – New Hampshire being the outlier.
Maine is also one of the best states for overall gender equality, according to the Gender Inequality Index. It’s also been deemed the fifth best state for women, so it makes sense that it’s supportive of women entrepreneurs.
Nation-wide, women-owned businesses are on the rise, with a growth rate almost double that of men-owned businesses. Maine also has exactly the same ratio as the national average for women to men in executive roles, 0.49. There’s definitely still some work to be done here, but we like to think we’re just growing into it. More women in management positions now can lead to more women in executive roles in the years to come.
Even though we’re a bit ahead of the curve, we love being in a state that is so encouraging to other women who are looking to start their business today. We love getting to work with other amazing female business owners and work with them to help their companies thrive.
Maine is a state that prides itself on inclusivity, education, and safety, with one of the lowest crime rates in the country. If you need even more proof that Maine is an awesome place to live and work as a woman, look no further.
Both Meg and Kaitlyn love living and working here so much that they couldn’t stay away. Meg used to vacation here before finally making the move at the beginning of the pandemic, and Kaitlyn returned after going out of state for college.
There are so many cozy neighborhoods and downtown areas (like our office space in Kittery Foreside). How could you not feel right at home? It seems as though we’ve fallen in love with Maine, and especially after seeing these stats, we don’t know why everyone else wouldn’t as well.
