Designing a Website that Leaves Room to Grow: Foraculture

Foraculture is a landscape architecture company based in Southern Maine, dedicated to giving back to the earth, using design to rebuild connections, and deepen relationships with the elements. They focus on regenerative design, working to change the ways humans interact with and think about the land, calling back to horticulture.

Foraculture came to recreative seeking a new website that better reflected their goals as a company and the ever-growing nature they adopt from their work. They put emphasis on continuous change and evolution, as they’ve learned from their plants–that is the only constant.

We wanted to create a site for them that puts their work in center stage but also allowed them to make changes easily and often. Although we normally use WordPress for its vast customization options, we opted for Squarespace with this site due to its ease of use. This way, the Foraculture staff can update their site themselves as projects are added, move forward, and change.

In our initial conversation with Cornelius from Foraculture, he wanted an easily editable, simple to use website that put their work and ethos in the forefront. Their previous website offered almost no information at all so we started by fleshing out the content to provide more insights into who they are and exactly what they do. We then built out a customizable gallery for their projects page so that they could showcase the amazing work they’ve done and how beautiful it truly is.

We went through a few iterations of this redesign before we landed on the final product, just like Foraculture designs multiple versions of each project, adjusting and improving as they go before they finalize their plans. Even now, after the site has been launched, they may make changes as their business grows and changes. We provided them with a structure and outline while allowing them room to make tweaks as needed over time.

Hopefully this site, like their projects, gives them room to grow and will last a long time, only needing maintenance work in the near future. Foraculture is passionate about giving back to the planet and designing sustainable, resilient outdoor spaces through holistic practice. They also enjoy teaching others about their work through presentations, workshops, and demonstrations focused on agroforestry, ecological design, and the design process.

We love that Foraculture is working towards a better environmental future for our planet, and we were happy to help them get more of their goodness out into the world with their new and improved site.
