Signs your website needs a redesign
have a website that you haven’t touched in years? dare I ask, decades, even? here’s a (non-exhaustive) list of some signs your website might be in need of a redesign (+ why you should bother updating it).
older than god
one of the first recommended/related questions that pop up when you search “ASPX” is “is ASPX obsolete?” + the answer it gives when you expand the dropdown is yes. ASPX was designed in the early 2000s strictly for desktop use, making it unresponsive and slow to load. while there are projects out there that remain in ASPX because that’s what they were built with, so many newer frameworks have been made since that basically no one is learning ASPX anymore or using it for new projects.
if the copyright year in the footer of your website still starts with 19… yeah, it might be time to make some updates. going along with that, if your website was made before mobile devices were made, you’re missing out on about half the traffic you could be getting if your site worked on both desktop and mobile. as mobile traffic increases, this will only get worse for your site.
pick up the pace
we live in a pretty fast-paced world. if your website takes too long to load (more than 3 seconds, on mobile), visitors will likely get impatient and leave. a study showed that when a website’s load time on mobile went from 1 to 3 seconds, bounce rate increased 32%. longer load times also led to less conversions + lower customer satisfaction rates.
especially as web users who never knew a world without the internet start to grow in number, making them wait is not the smartest move. as a gen z myself, we’ve been told our whole lives that all the knowledge in the world is “at our fingertips” or “just a click away.” that rhetoric doesn’t exactly set us up to be patient with website load times.
lost the plot
easy navigation is key. the real world is confusing enough. no one wants to feel lost on a website. if customers can’t find their way around + get the information they came to your site looking for easily, they’ll be left feeling frustrated, unlikely to want to do business with you.
plus, if they can’t navigate your site easily, how can they be expected to find your form, click to contact you, sign up for your newsletter, or make a purchase. your website should be designed with user experience in mind + make it easy for ‘em to find what they need + take action.
she said that I don’t look like me no more, no more
it happens to the best of us. you get on a kick making and updating content for your site, but then other obligations get in the way. if it’s been a while + that content is still the most recent representation of you and your work, it might not match your brand anymore. sometimes what perfectly represented your company + its values years ago isn’t the right fit anymore.
you might not think these outdated parts are that big a deal, but content that doesn’t match your current brand can confuse customers + negatively impact how they feel about and view your brand. if you have no consistent, clear tone of voice, it’s hard to gain consumer trust + brand loyalty.
